Start with the project, not a square-foot headline
A house size does not tell a painter whether you want walls alone, every ceiling, detailed woodwork or a full exterior. Start by choosing the job you want priced. You can then decide what is essential and what could be an optional extra.
There is no reliable local average established here for your project. A number borrowed from another company or a differently scoped job could give you the wrong budget. The useful first comparison is what each price includes.
| Project | Describe first | Keep separate |
|---|---|---|
| Interior | Rooms and surfaces | Ceiling, trim and repair additions |
| Exterior | Each side and material | Damaged wood or masonry repairs |
| Cabinets | Doors, drawers and exposed frames | Interiors, hardware changes and replacement parts |
The interior cost guide helps turn a room list into a request that a painter can assess.

What is inside a painting price
Preparation is part of the finished result. A wall that needs cleaning and a color change is a different task from a wall that needs old adhesive removed and uneven areas smoothed. The Painting Contractors Association preparation standard distinguishes work aimed at adhesion from work that improves appearance.
Read the estimate as several connected parts: preparing the surface, supplying the coating, applying the finish and protecting the property. Check whether moving items, working at height and returning hardware are included. These are comparison categories, not fixed percentages of the price.
A higher-priced option may include work you value, or work you do not need. A lower price may be suitable for a narrower goal. Make those choices visible before deciding.
Two similar homes can need different work
Consider two possible requests for the same rooms. One keeps the ceiling and trim, changes the wall color and includes agreed minor repairs. The other changes every painted surface, adds door work and asks for a smoother wall finish. These are illustrative scopes, not completed Columbia projects or price estimates.
The second request includes more components and a different appearance goal. Comparing their totals as if both were simply “painting the house” would hide the real choice. You could ask for the essential work and the optional additions to be priced separately.
For outside work, make a similar distinction between repainting sound surfaces and repairing failed material. The exterior cost guide explains what to separate.
Separate known work from allowances
Some work can be defined at the first visit. Other conditions may only become clear after preparation starts. Ask the estimate to distinguish agreed work from an allowance or an excluded repair.
For each uncertain item, record:
- What condition would trigger extra work.
- Who will inspect and explain it.
- How the added scope and price will be approved.
- Whether that change affects the schedule.
An allowance is useful only when you understand what it covers. It should not be mistaken for an unlimited repair budget. If you already know there is damaged wall material, include that in the repair-and-paint request rather than leaving it as a surprise.

Use the right detailed cost guide
Use the detailed guide that matches your project instead of applying one pricing rule everywhere. Interior work turns on rooms, surfaces and occupancy. Exteriors add materials, access and weather. Cabinet work needs an inventory of the parts being finished.
The cabinet cost guide is especially useful when a quote mentions only a door count. Frames, end panels and the inside of boxes may be treated differently. Once the scope is clear, use the quote comparison checklist to check proposals side by side.
Get a price for the work you actually want
You do not need a finished specification to get started. Tell us where the property is and what you would like painted or stained. Include the main problem or change you want, such as worn walls, a different cabinet color or an exterior repaint.
Measurements, photographs and product choices can follow the initial enquiry. A provider will establish the work, price and availability with you. Get a Painting Quote through the short form, with a callback number so the project can be discussed.
