Fence staining: count the faces, not just the length
Fence length does not tell the whole finishing story. Height, board pattern, exposed rails and the number of gates all affect what needs coating. One quote may cover the garden-facing boards while another includes the opposite face and every post.
Use a simple boundary sketch if it helps, but keep the scope in words as well. A note such as “rear fence only, both faces if access is arranged” is clearer than “stain the yard fence.”
| Item | What to identify |
|---|---|
| Fence runs | Front, rear or side sections included |
| Faces | Your side, the opposite side, or both |
| Details | Posts, caps, rails and exposed edges |
| Gates | Both faces and surrounding woodwork |
| Exclusions | Metal hardware, planting or sections left unchanged |
Ask how the finished scope will be measured before comparing totals. The cost guide explains why preparation and included components matter as much as overall extent.
New, weathered or already coated wood
Fresh timber, weathered boards and an already coated fence may need different preparation. Record any known old product and point out peeling or uneven sections. If replacement boards are part of the project, identify them separately so their finish can be assessed with the retained wood.
Benjamin Moore’s exterior-wood guidance describes condition-based preparation and testing for its deck stain system. The same planning principle is relevant to a fence: assess the wood and prior finish before selecting a compatible product. The actual fence product must be suitable for its vertical use; deck foot-traffic instructions do not apply to a boundary fence.
Agree what the painter will clean or remove and what repair is outside the finishing job. If a post is unstable or boards need replacement, resolve that work rather than expecting a coating to correct it.
Choose visibility and color on the actual fence
A sample on your fence is more useful than choosing from a small image online. Different boards and previous finishes can produce different appearances under the same stain. Ask to see a representative section that includes the material you will keep.
Discuss whether the goal is visible grain, a more even color or an opaque painted look. A stronger color may change the visual effect, but it does not guarantee that every texture, repair or older coating disappears. The wood-finish comparison explains the appearance choices; product suitability must still be checked for your fence.
Look at the sample beside the house, gate hardware and planting that will remain. If the fence faces a neighbor’s garden, agreeing the intended color before work is sensible coordination. It is not a substitute for checking who controls the fence or where access is permitted.
Neighbor-facing work and planting access
Decide how the painter can reach each agreed face. Dense shrubs, stored items and a narrow space beside a shed may change the approach or leave an area inaccessible. Ask who will move belongings, protect plants and make the space available.
Do not assume that a quote gives permission to enter the neighboring property. Arrange access with the relevant person before including that work in a firm schedule. If access cannot be secured, keep the unavailable face visibly excluded rather than leaving it as an unspoken expectation.
Discuss how gates will be used and secured during the job, particularly when pets normally use the yard. For quote comparison, write down which faces are reachable and whether the provider has priced around any restrictions. That makes the comparison much more useful than asking only for a lower total.
Request the fence finish you need
Tell us the town or ZIP, the type of wood fence if known, and whether you are thinking about one side or both. An approximate description is enough to begin. You do not need to settle a final shade or calculate the full surface area first.
If the request also includes outdoor decking, describe it as a separate part of the project. Deck staining involves walking surfaces and return-to-use decisions that do not belong in a fence-only quote.
Get your fence finishing quote. This independent enquiry website can pass project details to a provider, who will confirm the available scope, access arrangements and price. For a surrounding community, check the Maury County area list and include the actual project location.
