Price the rooms and surfaces you want finished
Begin with a room list, then mark what needs painting in each room. Walls, ceilings, doors and baseboards are separate choices. Keeping a sound ceiling while changing the walls is a different project from repainting every surface.
| Room entry | Record | Optional addition |
|---|---|---|
| Living area | Walls and open connections to other rooms | Ceiling or built-in woodwork |
| Bedroom | Walls and closet scope | Door faces and trim |
| Hall or stairs | Walls and access restrictions | Railings, spindles or high ceiling |
This is a planning worksheet, not a required measurement exercise. There is no reliable Columbia average established here for these differing scopes. A project quote should describe the work, rather than rely on the home’s floor area alone. See interior painting for the service choices.
Preparation can change two otherwise similar quotes
The desired wall finish changes what preparation must achieve. Repairing an obvious hole does not mean every old ripple or roller mark will be removed. Say whether your goal is a tidy repaint or a more extensive surface improvement.
The Painting Contractors Association preparation standard treats appearance improvement and basic preparation as different levels of work. That helps explain why two estimates can describe different results even when both include paint.
Wallpaper adds another question. Sherwin-Williams’ preparation guide addresses adhesive residue and wall damage after removal. If paper is coming off, the quote should explain how that hidden condition will be assessed. Recurring cracks or wet material need the cause considered before cosmetic repairs. The drywall repair page separates those decisions.
Occupied versus empty rooms
An occupied home needs a plan for the people and belongings that remain. Agree who moves furniture, where items can be stored and which rooms must stay available. Do not assume that all moving and returning items are included.
EPA guidance on remodeling work recommends separating occupants from work dust and pollutants. The practical arrangement depends on the home and the materials used. A quote should make protection and access responsibilities understandable.
An empty property and a furnished one are not automatically comparable, even if the room list matches. Use the home preparation guide to identify the actual differences rather than assuming a standard discount.

Compare two illustrative interior scopes
Here are two unpriced examples for comparing scope. They are hypothetical, not local job records.
- A walls-only refresh keeps the existing ceiling and woodwork. The quote names the walls, agreed patch repairs and the new wall finish.
- A fuller room update includes those walls plus the ceiling, doors and trim. It also describes any additional smoothing and the handling of hardware.
Neither is the right choice for every home. If the budget is limited, price the work that fixes the main concern first. Optional additions can be shown separately so you can make a deliberate choice. Use the comparison checklist to avoid confusing a narrower offer with a cheaper version of the same job.
Keep the product, finish and extras visible
Keep the final estimate readable. For each group of surfaces, it should identify the selected product and finish, preparation to be done and any areas excluded. Note how extra repairs are approved if preparation reveals more damage.
Avoid comparing brand names alone. A manufacturer may offer several products suited to different surfaces and uses. The specific coating and the work beneath it matter more than a general promise of premium paint.
The main cost guide brings these categories together. It does not set a rate, deposit or payment schedule on behalf of an independent painter.
Request an interior price for your chosen scope
To request a price, give the property location and the rooms you want changed. Mention anything likely to affect the work, such as wallpaper, visible damage or a stairwell. Approximate information is enough for the first conversation.
You can decide exact colors and finish preferences with the provider later. Get a Painting Quote and include a callback number; a complete room survey is not needed before submitting.
